Axarquía is a word of Arab origin that refers to the situation towards the East of a place and that in the province of Malaga has survived as a denomination of its easternmost region.
In its landscape, very rugged by the proximity of the Penibética mountain range to the sea, the vineyards are still important, although the new subtropical crops and the impact of tourism have caused economic and urban changes, especially in the coastal strip.
The arches that cross the streets, the passages that join the upper floors of the houses and the enjabegados walls, make up its most characteristic urban philosophy.
